The low-cost carrier has been making lots of changes lately. Earlier this month, I wrote about Allegiant Air planning to close its base at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on September 2nd. The airline cited unsustainable operating costs that have reached around $50 per departing passenger. While Allegiant will still serve Los Angeles (for now), it decided to cut nine routes with more likely coming from LAX.
In addition to the changes at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Allegiant Air has completely stopped serving these airports:
- Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
- El Paso International Airport (ELP)
- Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT)
- Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport (GPT)
- San Antonio International Airport (SAT)
Anthony’s Take: It’s not surprising to see Allegiant dropping routes and airports. Passengers are concerned about the economy and starting to travel less. That coupled with the desire for more premium travel driving the industry is taking its toll here.
