Allegiant Air recently announced that it was shutting down its base at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and cutting 10 routes from the Texas capitol in January. The low-cost carrier cited space constraints due to the South Terminal closing.
The base opened in 2021 at a cost of $75 million. This created at least 89 jobs and saw 18 routes operated from the airport. With the coming closure, Allegiant will cut 10 of these (56% of what the airline flies there). Overall, the carrier has only 1.4% of passenger traffic at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). This will drop below 1% after January 7th when the routes are cut.
The following 10 routes will get the axe this winter:
- Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZM)
- Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG)
- Des Moines International Airport (DSM)
- Eugene Airport (EUG)
- Grand Rapids Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR)
- Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport *TYS)
- Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF)
- Orange County’s John Wayne Airport (SNA)
- Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ)
- Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
After January 7th, Allegiant Air will continue to connect Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) with:
- Asheville Regional Airport (AVL)
- Indianapolis International Airport (IND)
- Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)
- Omaha’s Eppley Airfield (OMA)
- Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB)
- Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)
- Provo Airport (PVU)
- Sioux Falls Regional Airport (FSD)
An Allegiant Air spokesperson said in a statement:
Because of the South Terminal’s closure, Allegiant will eventually relocate to the main terminal. Unfortunately, the gate space we have been offered will not allow us to sustain our base at AUS. However, we will continue to serve Austin with all flights operating as turns from other bases, providing our customers with the exceptional service they have come to expect from Allegiant.”
Anthony’s Take: Allegiant Air is cutting its base as well as 10 routes at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) this January. The low-cost carrier will continue to operate flights to Austin from its other bases.
