Alaska Airlines is out with a new promotion called “Upgrade Unlocked” that sounds good at first, but is kind of mundane once you read the details. Each day this summer, Alaska will upgrade one passenger (that’s not one per flight, but one across its entire network) to Alaska’s Premium Class. These seats are in the Economy cabin, but offer additional legroom, free alcoholic beverages, and earlier boarding (similar to United’s Economy Plus and Delta’s Comfort+).
Each day from June 1st through September 2nd, one passenger will be randomly selected and notified through the Alaska Airlines mobile app or by email that they’ve been upgraded to Premium Class. These seats are located behind First Class and are given to elite members and sold for an upcharge. Alaska’s Premium Class offers four extra inches of legroom and complimentary beer, wine, or cocktails on most flights over 350 miles.
Eric Edge, Managing Director of Marketing and Advertising at Alaska Airlines, said:
Upgrade Unlocked is one way we’re showing guests our appreciation for choosing to fly with us to their favorite destinations this summer. Premium Class is just one of the many premium products and services we offer to our guests, including our best-in-class lounges, the freshest West Coast food and beverage line-up and our award-winning Mileage Plan program with the fastest path to elite status. Whether it’s their first time or they’ve experienced Premium Class before – we can’t wait to hear from our guests who receive this surprise upgrade!”
Anthony’s Take: This will be a nice surprise for the winners, I guess. This is clearly being done for the social media buzz and costs Alaska nothing as these seats would be assigned and filled as needed anyway.
