Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines announced lots of changes this week including two new international routes from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), several new lounges, and more. Along with these changes, Alaska is dropping eight routes that it currently flies to Hawaii altogether (these will still be served by Hawaiian).
The routes that are getting the axe on Alaska Airlines include:
- Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) (ends on March 18th)
- Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) to/from Portland International Airport (PDX) (ends on June 11th)
- Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) to/from San Diego International Airport (SAN) (ends on June 11th)
- Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) to/from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) (ends on March 18th)
- Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) to/from San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) (ends on March 18th)
- Maui’s Kahului Airport (OGG) to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) (ends on December 29th)
- Maui’s Kahului Airport (OGG) to/from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) (ends on January 25th)
- Maui’s Kahului Airport (OGG) to/from San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) (ends on March 18th)
Alaska Airlines will also reduce the frequency on its flights between Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). These will drop from 5x daily to 2x daily. Hawaiian will also increase capacity on the routes to/from Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) that Alaska is cutting.
Anthony’s Take: Alignment of the route network is the next logical step in bringing these two airlines together. Hawaiian will focus on Hawaii and Alaska will look to grow and maintain all other routes.
