Air Canada announced today that it will be resuming flights between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) while increasing service to/from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). Air Canada suspended service to China during the pandemic and has slowly been reinstating it.

Both routes will operate 1x daily on a Boeing 787-9 with 30 Business, 21 Premium Economy, and 247 Economy Class seats. Air Canada’s international dining options are guided by a panel of Canadian chefs that include David Hawksworth, Vikram Vij, and Jérôme Ferrer. I’ve flown Air Canada to Europe several times and found the Business Class meal offering to be decent (a bit better than United’s Polaris®).

Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President of Revenue and Network Planning at Air Canada, said:

We are resuming our non-stop services between Canada and Beijing and increasing our flights between Canada and Shanghai, reflecting the importance of these markets in Air Canada’s global network. With the investments we have made at our YVR hub linking Air Canada’s extensive North American network to our international flights, travelling between North America and Asia is convenient and compelling for leisure and business travellers alike. We look forward to welcoming our customers onboard our flights.”

Anthony’s Take: It has taken a long time for Air Canada (and most carriers) to have any semblance of the schedule that they once flew to and from China. Service has not fully returned, but it’s well on its way.
