Aer Lingus is making a big change to its in inflight technology by launching Starlink-powered Wi-Fi across its fleet and offering passengers fast, free internet access in every cabin. The rollout began with flight EI 105 from Dublin Airport (DUB) to New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) where travelers became the first to experience the airline’s next-generation connectivity.

Powered by Starlink’s network of more than 10,000 low-Earth orbit satellites (the new system delivers speeds of up to 500+ Mbps) allowing passengers to stream, work, game, and browse seamlessly throughout their journey. Unlike traditional inflight Wi-Fi, the low-latency connection enables a more consistent and reliable experience.

The first aircraft equipped with the technology is an Airbus A330, which has undergone extensive testing ahead of its debut. This plane will serve as the foundation for a broader rollout across the fleet as Aer Lingus prepares to expand the service to additional aircraft throughout the year.

Aer Lingus plans a phased installation of Starlink across its fleet (starting with long-haul aircraft operating routes to North America). The airline expects all long-haul planes to be equipped with the system by early 2027 with short-haul European aircraft to follow. One of the most notable aspects of the rollout is that the service will be available free of charge across all cabins. This marks a significant shift in the airline’s onboard offering, making high-speed connectivity accessible to every traveler (not just premium passengers).

The introduction of Starlink Wi-Fi is part of Aer Lingus’ wider investment in digital innovation, which has included upgrades to its mobile app and airport technology such as Express Bag Drop kiosks. By enhancing both the ground and onboard experience, the airline is positioning itself to meet the expectations of modern travelers who increasingly demand seamless connectivity.

Lynne Embleton, Chief Executive Officer, Aer Lingus, said:

Introducing Starlink on our first aircraft is a big moment for us in Aer Lingus. It means our customers can browse, download and stream at speeds as fast as, or quicker than, they’d get at home. This level of connectivity is a real gamechanger. It gives our customers more freedom in how they spend their time on board and it helps our crews and teams work more efficiently. As we mark our 90th year, Starlink is just one of a number of customer improvements we’re bringing to Aer Lingus.”

Anthony’s Take: With the launch of Starlink, Aer Lingus joins a growing number of airlines redefining what passengers can expect from inflight connectivity. As more aircraft come online with high-speed internet, the ability to stay fully connected at 35,000 feet is quickly becoming less of a luxury and more of a standard feature of air travel.
