Here’s something that you thankfully don’t see every day. A man went on a rampage through Terminal 1 at Silvio Berlusconi Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) this morning and attacked the check-in desk with a hammer before setting fire to the area.

The incident happened around 11:00 AM local time in the very busy terminal. The man smashed screens and struck walls as he raged through the terminal. A fire burns as passengers flee the area. Another man with a fire extinguisher begins to put out the blaze and then hits the angry man in the head with it before tackling him to the ground.

Thankfully, no passenger injuries were reported and the fire was contained. Passengers were evacuated due to the smoke, but operations are returning to normal. As always, there will be some delays and cancellations. The suspect who set the fire has been identified as a 28-year-old Malian national. Reports say that he is a Malian resident of Italy with no prior criminal record and subsidiary protection status until 2027. He was not a passenger and did not have a boarding pass. It’s unclear what set him off and made him attack the airport.

Anthony’s Take: It’s good that no one was hurt, but there needs to be tighter security around who can enter an airport. I cannot tell you the number of times I have seen homeless people sleeping in airports. Situations like this make me think that without a boarding pass (or legitimate confirmed interest in being there) that people should not be allowed to enter.
