The Maldives is a dream destination for many and the W Maldives just made it a bit dreamier with an expansive makeover of its villas, spa, and more.
The experience of staying at the W Maldives begins when guests arrive by seaplane. They are greeted on the Arrival Jetty, which sets a welcome tone, along with a cocktail from the hidden bar. Guests are then brought to the W’s signature Living Room (which here is an open-air sanctuary with soaring ceilings, bold colors, and natural textures).
The resort’s 77 villas have all been redesigned. Overwater villas take design inspiration from whale sharks and beach villas showcase the textures of mangroves. Larger groups can book the first-ever Supreme Overwater Two-Bedroom Villas and Oasis Overwater Two-Bedroom Villas. These offer expansive living spaces and private pools. The two new Oasis Two-Bedroom Beach Villas feature water slides that connect the second floor to a private pool.
Dining at W Maldives offers global flavors and cocktails made with local ingredients. Restaurants include FISH (the resort’s signature fine dining restaurant), FIRE (a relaxed beachside smokehouse), KITCHEN (the all-day dining venue), SIP (an overwater Latin American-inspired bar), and WET Deck (cocktails and light bites). The W Maldives will also host pop-ups, featuring world-renowned chefs throughout the year.
Amenities include the Splinterworks Vertex water slide along with a pool and whirlpool, the brand’s signature AWAY Spa with four overwater couples’ treatment rooms, and FIT (fitness center). The W Maldives also has a house reef for snorkeling and diving experiences.
Sustainability is central part of the resort’s ethos. Eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices were used throughout the redesign and the resort’s operations. The resort is home to one of the largest biogas plants in the Maldives and a fruit and vegetable garden. The resort has committed to be self-sustaining by 2026.
Amila Handunwala, General Manager of the W Maldives, said:
The reimagined W Maldives embraces the deep cultural heritage of the Maldives, blending it with the resort’s modern design to create an immersive, elevated experience. Our goal is to offer guests a unique opportunity to connect with the traditions of the Maldives, from its rich history and cultural rituals to its natural beauty, while enjoying the bold, creative energy that W Hotels is known for. Every detail has been thoughtfully designed to reflect the soul of the destination, inviting guests to explore, discover, and unwind in a truly exceptional setting.”
George Fleck, Senior Vice President and Global Brand Leader of W Hotels, added:
We are not simply unveiling a completely renovated resort; we are redefining our signature, liberated approach to destination-driven luxury with this newly reimagined hotel. W Maldives has been transformed for both global travelers and locals alike, offering meaningful experiences and a deep dive into the cultural richness of these islands. We’ve created a haven that reflects the dynamic energy of this world-class, coveted destination while setting a new standard for W Hotels Escapes globally.”
Anthony’s Take: The Maldives have long been on my travel bucket list. I will get there one day and know there are lots of luxe options to call home while visiting. The W Maldives looks great and just might be my choice.
