STARLUX Airlines is a Taiwanese carrier that launched operations in 2020. The airline flies throughout Asia and Southeast Asia as well as three current US destinations from Taipei Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE): Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). It has been revealed that a fourth US city is being added to the map: Ontario International Airport (ONT).
Back in June, I wrote about STARLUX’ aspirations to join an airline alliance. oneworld® doesn’t currently have a Taiwanese carrier (SkyTeam has China Airlines and Star Alliance has EVA Air). During an investor conference last September, STARLUX’ CEO restated that the airline would like to join the oneworld® Alliance next year.
Flights to Taiwan from the United States are pretty competitive with Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) having up to 7x daily flights (including China Airlines, Eva Air, STARLUX, and United Airlines), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) flying up to 6x daily (including China Airlines, Eva Air, STARLUX, and United Airlines), and 3x daily from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) (including China Airlines, Eva Air, STARLUX, and Delta Air Lines). China Airlines currently flies 1x daily to/from Ontario International Airport (ONT) and it has flown this route since 2018. It’s about to get some competition from STARLUX.
Flights between Taipei Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and Ontario International Airport (ONT) will operate 4x weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The route will be flown with an Airbus A350-900. It offers four First Class, 26 Business Class, 36 Premium Economy, and 240 Economy Class seats.
Anthony’s Take: People seem to rave about this airline and many have lucked out scoring premium seats using Alaska Airlines miles. I love Taiwan and want to go back. I’ll likely fly Eva Air from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), but STARLUX is intriguing.

SFO also has flights on BR to TPE
Forgot that one. Updated. Thanks!
Maybe I’m just being obtuse but why not choose a new market rather than Ontario, which overlaps heavily with LAX? Why not Chicago, Dallas, or New York?
EVA is superb. I haven’t tried Qsuites yet but EVA is very tough to beat, particularly on the Hello Kitty planes. It’ll be interesting to make the comparison in June when I make my rookie Qsuites flight.
It’s for the diaspora. The Inland Empire has a significant Taiwanese population where ONT is much more convenient than going to LAX. While ONT might be a part of QLA for marketing, there’s enough of an O/D market there, and JX has shown that they aren’t afraid to compete with BR/CI.
Super interesting. Thanks!
