United Adds Four Routes and Cuts Three In Latest Adjustments to the Map

United Airlines made a few tweaks to its route map this week with four routes added and three getting the axe. These are in addition to its plans announced this week to fly between Denver International Airport (DEN) and Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) (more here) and start flying between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) (more here).

New Routes

United will launch flights between San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Panama’s Tocumen International Airport (PTY) on May 22nd. These daily flights will be flown with Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft that offer 16 First Class, 54 Economy Plus, and 96 Economy Class seats. This route is already flown by United’s Star Alliance partner, Copa Airlines up to 11x weekly.

A seasonal route between Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Portland International Jetport (PWM) will run 1x weekly on Saturdays between June 28th and August 16th with flights operated by Mesa Airlines (operating as United Express) on Embraer 175 aircraft. These offer 12 First Class, 16 Economy Plus, and 48 Economy Class seats.

Flights between Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Ithaca Tompkins International Airport (IAD) will run 2x daily beginning on March 30th. CommuteAir (operating as United Express) will handle the flying on its Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft with six Economy Plus and 44 Economy Class seats.

United is also bringing back an international route that Continental Micronesia flew until October 2005. Flights between Guam’s Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport (GUM) and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) will restart on April 2nd and run 2x weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays with a Boeing 737-800 that offers 16 First Class, 42 Economy Plus, and 108 Economy Class seats.

Route Cuts

United will end service to Lewiston-Nez Perce County Regional Airport (LWS). It’s currently flying there from Denver International Airport (DEN) daily with service handled by SkyWest (as United Express) using Embraer 175 aircraft with 12 First Class, 16 Economy Plus, and 48 Economy Class seats. This ends on January 31st. The route began in October 2021 and the airport will be left with commercial service from Delta Air Lines only. It flies to/from there and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) as well as Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

Daily flights between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Ithaca Tompkins International Airport (IAD) will end on March 29th. Gojet Airlines (operating as United Express) will cease flying the route. It currently uses Bombardier CRJ-550 aircraft with 10 First Class, 20 Economy Plus, and 20 Economy Class seats. The route is shifting to the Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) one mentioned above, but passengers will see a downgrade in aircraft as the new one does not offer First Class. It’s a short flight, but nice to have on any route.

Finally, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will lose its nonstop flights to Calgary International Airport (YYC) on United Airlines immediately. WestJet operates the route up to 4x daily.

Anthony’s Take: Route networks are constantly being updated. United still gets praise for having the most interesting and being the bravest with international options.
