The outdoor lodging segment is booming. Hilton launched a partnership this year with AutoCamp to offer guests the ability to stay in custom Airstreams and luxury tents. Then, World of Hyatt® announced that Under Canvas’ 13 outdoor resorts were bookable as part of its Mr and Mrs Smith partnership back in July. Now, Marriott is jumping on this trend with the acquisition of a national network of cabins known as Postcard Cabins as well as a long-term agreement to make Trailborn boutique hotels available under the Marriott umbrella.
The Postcard Cabins and Trailborn portfolio will enhance the portfolio that Marriott Bonvoy® already offers globally with accommodations such as tiny homes and cabins in natural destinations and unique lodging near outdoor wonders like national parks, deserts, ski areas, and shorelines.
Postcard Cabins
Marriott has acquired the Postcard Cabins brand, which was formerly known as Getaway Outposts. The Postcard Cabins are groupings of tiny cabins located within two hours of major metropolitan areas. The cabins are dog-friendly and feature modern design, private bathrooms, full kitchens, and ample space between cabins for privacy and relaxation. The current Postcard Cabins portfolio includes 29 properties with over 1,200 cabins across the United States. The Postcard Cabins will be part of Marriott’s planned outdoor-focused collection with expected integration into Marriott’s systems in 2025.
Trailborn
Marriott has also entered into a long-term agreement to add Trailborn’s portfolio to its offerings. Trailborn focuses on bringing bespoke hotels built for adventure to the great American outdoors. Trailborn’s current and pipeline portfolio consists of 559 rooms across five iconic outdoor destinations. Locations are near Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Canyon, and in Highlands, NC. Properties are planned for Wrightsville Beach, NC, and Mendocino, CA. Trailborn offers accommodations inspired by each property’s unique locale, experience-driven programming, curated food and beverage offerings, and insightful property teams to help guests chart their exploration. Trailborn’s current portfolio will also be part of Marriott’s platforms in 2025.
Leeny Oberg, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President, Development at Marriott International, said:
Marriott has long been committed to offering incredible travel experiences for every trip purpose. As guests are increasingly interested in nature-immersive travel, we are excited to build on the incredible breadth of our portfolio and welcome the Postcard Cabins and Trailborn portfolios to Marriott Bonvoy® as we deliver more accommodations and experiences in awe-inspiring destinations. Whether you’re looking for bespoke lodging near natural wonders, an elevated camping experience, or off the beaten path excursions in nature, our planned outdoor-focused collection is expected to offer a broad array of options for seasoned adventurers and first-time explorers.”
Anthony’s Take: I’m not an outdoorsy guy, but I know that their is tremendous interest in this segment. All of the major hotel chains have jumped in and made acquisitions, signed licensing deals, and integrated these properties into their portfolios. Marriott was behind Hilton and Hyatt, but seems to have charted a path here.
