Delta Air Lines was the first US carrier to announce service to Tulum’s Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO) back in October 2023 to launch in March 2024. Other carriers quickly followed suit and American Airlines, JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, and United Airlines quickly made their own schedules public. The capacity has clearly outpaced the demand as we’re now seeing airlines retreat from this new Mexican airport. United Airlines is the latest to slash its schedule.
Spirit Airlines decided to cut its flights to Tulum’s Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO) before they even took off based on aircraft availability. The carrier it was supposed to fly from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Orlando International Airport (MCO). Neither of those routes ever materialized.
American Airlines was the second airline to cut service. Its flights to/from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) will cease flying on February 13th. American will still offer service from both Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Miami International Airport (MIA).
JetBlue will shift its New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to/from Tulum’s Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO) to a winter seasonal flight (last scheduled flight is on April 29th.
United Airlines cuts back Tulum (TQO):
• TQO to Los Angeles (LAX) canceled/not returning
• TQO to Chicago (ORD) suspended March 30 to October 26

Now, United is cutting down its schedule with flights to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) cancelled altogether. Flights to/from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) are suspended between March 30th for Chicago and May 20th for Newark and October 26th. We’ll see if these both return. United’s 2x daily flights from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) will continue to operate 2x daily.

Anthony’s Take: I was supposed to go to Tulum this fall. Schedule changes got me annoyed and I cancelled the trip. The new routes just don’t have the demand to justify them and just as quickly as carriers flocked to it, they’re pulling back.
