SAS joined SkyTeam on September 1st. With this change of airline alliance, it’s looking to align with core partners like Air France-KLM, Virgin Atlantic, and Delta Air Lines and eventually enter this group’s joint venture. Today, Virgin Atlantic and SAS announced that a codeshare agreement has been signed between the two airlines. This joins the codeshare agreement that SAS has already signed with Delta Air Lines.

SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) and Virgin Atlantic have signed an agreement that launches next week. The codeshare agreement offers reciprocal codeshare flights and frequent flyer benefits including the ability to earn and redeem Flying Club or SAS EuroBonus points across both carriers.

Virgin Atlantic customers traveling from the United States and Canada can purchase seamless onward connections through London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Manchester Airport (MAN) onto SAS’ flights to Bergen Airport (BGO), Copenhagen Airport (CPH), Oslo Airport (OSL), Stavanger Airport (SVG), and Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN). SAS customers will have the opportunity to connect seamlessly to Virgin Atlantic’s Caribbean, African, Middle East, and South Asian destinations once the airlines receive government approval.

Virgin Atlantic’s Gold and Silver Flying Club members, along with SAS EuroBonus members, can take advantage of SkyPriority services at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and airports in key Scandinavian gateways. Benefits include priority check in, baggage handling, and boarding.

Juha Jarvinen, Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Atlantic, said:

We’re delighted to launch a codeshare with our SkyTeam partners at SAS, enhancing our connectivity and offering greater customer benefits to our frequent flyers, who will be able to achieve rewards faster.  As a fellow APEX five-star airline, we look forward to strengthening our partnership with SAS as we continue to broaden our global network.”

Paul Verhagen, Chief Commercial Officer at SAS, added:

We are very pleased to launch this new codeshare partnership with Virgin Atlantic, expanding SAS’s global reach and offering our customers even more travel options to new and exciting destinations such as Barbados, Jamaica, and Antigua, with additional destinations to be introduced later. This collaboration provides EuroBonus members with expanded opportunities to earn and redeem points across Virgin Atlantic’s extensive network, strengthening the value of our loyalty program. We look forward to building a long-lasting and successful partnership with our SkyTeam partner, benefitting travelers on both sides.”

Anthony’s Take: This is another of several codeshare agreements that SAS will continue strike with its new alliance members before the joint venture is permitted. I’m looking forward to having these options as part of SkyTeam.
