United Airlines announced today that it’s refreshing the wines served in Economy Class. The new options include a rosé as well as a sparkling wine. These wines will be served in cans versus the mini plastic bottles and will start appearing in flight on October 1st.
More than 20 million glasses of wine have been served across United’s operation this year. That’s 1.5x the number of beer or spirits served and more than 3.2 million glasses of wine in domestic Economy Class alone. Four different wines will be served onboard (each available in a 250 milliliter can, which is comparable to about a 1.5 glasses of wine). These will each cost $12 (or one can be had on a complimentary basis in Economy if a member holds Premier 1K® or Global Services® status). Choices include:
- Just Enough Wines Rosé
- Maker Brut Bubbles
- Just Enough Wines Cabernet Sauvignon
- Just Enough Wines Chardonnay
The transition to aluminum canned wine will reduce the number of single-use plastic bottles by an estimated 4.7 million per year. Aluminum is nearly infinitely recyclable and supports United’s commitment to sustainability. These wines also two women-owned brands.
Aaron McMillan, United’s Managing Director of Hospitality Programs, said:
Our new economy wine list is giving travelers more variety and better quality. After the overwhelmingly positive response to the addition of rosé in United Polaris® business class, and ongoing fanfare for sparkling options, we’re thrilled to now offer rosé and a higher quality brut bubbles option for our economy passengers, delivering a more premium experience onboard.”
Anthony’s Take: These wines sound good to me. Canned and boxed wines do not hold the stigma they once did and its great to see United support small producers like these choices.
