[Correction: The flight diverted to Houston and not Charlotte.]
American Airlines flight AA885 between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) was forced to divert yesterday after an oven fire in the forward galley caught on fire. This is just what beleaguered aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, does not need at the present while it still is dealing with the 737 MAX 9 issues (more here).
NBC News is reporting that shortly into the flight, the oven in the forward galley had an issue. This was terminated and declared fire safe within 30 minutes, but the aircraft was diverted to Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). The plane landed safely and all passengers were safely deplaned in Houston without injuries.
American Airlines released the following statement:
The aircraft landed safely and without incident, and taxied to the gate under its own power. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and appreciate our team members for their professionalism.”
The Houston Fire Department met the aircraft upon arrival and American is evaluating the Boeing 737-800. Passengers were reaccommodated on another plane that arrived in Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) over seven hours late.
Anthony’s Take: This sounds like another scary situation albeit one that was quickly resolved. Relieved that all of the passengers and crew safely landed in Houston.
