$500 Million Expansion Slated For United’s Washington DC Hub

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) will be the latest to see a significant investment from United Airlines. The carrier has poured more than $32 billion into the infrastructure at Denver International Airport (DEN), Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), and other locations across its network. A new Terminal E will transform the customer experience in Washington DC over the next few years.

The new 435,000-square-foot, 14-gate concourse will include an expansive 40,000-square-foot United Club℠ (one of the largest that United will operate with 70% more capacity than what is currently available) and other state-of-the-art customer amenities. The terminal is scheduled to open in late 2026. The expansion is possible thanks to a collaboration between United, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), and local and federal funding, including grants from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for airport improvement projects.

United Airlines is the largest private employer in the Washington DC metro with more than 8,000 employees. It offers flights to more destinations than any other carrier and continues to grow. United will open a new flight attendant training center in 2025. It’s also expanding its network even further with new destinations while offering 25% more flights than it did in 2023.

United CEO, Scott Kirby, said:

Washington Dulles has emerged as a global gateway and these new investments will help deliver the world-class facility that our employees and customers deserve. Today is one of many milestone celebrations to come in United’s long-term commitment in advancing our Dulles hub.”

Anthony’s Take: Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is in need of some renovations and new facilities. A lot of the airport feels old and dated. These changes will help to modernize and create a more efficient hub.
