Mexico City offers rich in history, culture, and plenty to do in a bustling metropolis (the most populous city in North America), but when I’m there my mind is on one thing: food. From simple yet Michelin-starred street vendors to fancier affairs, the flavors of this city are worth the trip alone.
Here are five things you can’t miss on your visit.
5. Palacio de Bellas Artes
The Palacio de Bellas Artes is an iconic cultural center that hosts world-class performances, including ballet and opera. We didn’t check out any performances, but came for the building itself. It’s famous for its murals by Mexican artists like Diego Rivera.
Can’t Miss: Buy a ticket and check out the incredibly vibrant murals on the upper floors.
Address: Av. Juarez S/N, Centro Histórico de la Cdad. de México, Centro, Cuauhtémoc, 06050 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
4. Roma & Condesa Neighborhoods
These trendy neighborhoods are known for their beautiful Art Deco buildings, lush tree-lined streets, and lots of dogs. Stroll through Parque México, visit hip cafes, and check out boutiques. At night, enjoy the area’s vibrant nightlife, with tons of craft cocktail bars and spots for live music. Our hotel (Andaz Mexico City Condesa) on the last visit we made was located in Condesa. The St. Regis (where we stayed on our last visit in 2018) is also nearby. Of course, I also found a Starbucks.
Can’t Miss: If you’re a dog lover, you’ll find furry friends of all shapes and sizes every few steps in the Condesa neighborhood.
Address: Condesa and Roma Neighborhoods
3. Chapultepec Castle & Park
Located on Chapultepec Hill, Chapultepec Castle offers breathtaking views of the city and a look into Mexico’s history. Once the home of emperors and presidents, it now houses the National Museum of History. Surrounding the castle is Bosque de Chapultepec, which is one of the largest city parks in the world. It contains museums, a lake, and a zoo.
Can’t Miss: The stained glass windows are incredible. Take some time to take in the craftsmanship and beautiful colors.
Address: Bosque de Chapultepec I Sección s/n, Col. Bosque de Chapultepec
2. Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul)
Located in the charming neighborhood of Coyoacán, the Frida Kahlo Museum, or Casa Azul, is a must-visit for art lovers and fans of Frida Kahlo. The bright blue house and the buildings around it were the place where the iconic Mexican artist was born and spent much of her life. Inside, you’ll find her personal belongings and many of her works of art. My only complaint is that there were not too many original paintings, but lots of sculptures. Get tickets in advance as this attraction always sells out.
Can’t Miss: Look for Frida’s death mask on her bed.
Address: Londres 247, Del Carmen, Coyoacán, 04100 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
1. MICHELIN-Starred Tacos at Taquería El Califa de León
This tiny taco stand received a MICHELIN star in 2024. It was worthy of the accolade and it’s easy to see why it has been in business since 1968. While there is no shortage of good eats in Mexico City, make sure to put Taquería El Califa de León (my full review here) on your list while visiting this vibrant city. Tacos run under $5 each. How can you beat that?
Can’t Miss: All four varieties were delicious, but the bistec and gaonera are sublime.
Address: Av. Ribera de San Cosme 56, San Rafael, Cuauhtémoc, 06470 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico
Mexico City is a destination that blends ancient history, colonial charm, and modern culture. Bring your walking shoes and appetite to this great city.
Bonus Hotel Pick: The Andaz Mexico City Condesa is a stylish luxury hotel nestled in the heart of the trendy Condesa neighborhood. This Hyatt property offers stylish rooms, city views, and top-notch amenities including a rooftop pool, a cocktail bar, and a pet-friendly atmosphere. The photos I took for the review were accidentally deleted, but the hotel is excellent, overall.

We routinely stay in the Condesa neighborhood, for the nightlife and art, but for me it’s Parque México for the dog park.
Also, though it’s small, id recommend the Diego Rivera museum.
