Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It’s famous for its canals, architecture, and cultural heritage. The vibrant city has a relaxed atmosphere that’s perfect for exploring by foot, bike, or boat. Whether you’re interested in art, history, or just want to hang out, Amsterdam should be on your travel list.
Here are five things you can’t miss on your visit.
5. Taste Dutch Cuisine
Amsterdam is home to many traditional Dutch restaurants, where you can try local dishes like stamppot (mashed potatoes and vegetables), bitterballen (crispy meatballs), pannenkoeken (pancakes), and stroopwafels. One of my favorite spots for homestyle, Dutch food is Moeders. It’s been serving traditional dishes for over 30 years.
Can’t Miss: Grab some of the popular street food: herring. Grab one by the tail and pop your head back to taste this Dutch treat.
Address: Moeders | Rozengracht 251, 1016 SX Amsterdam, Netherlands
4. Visit the Anne Frank House
The Anne Frank House is a museum dedicated to the life of Anne Frank and the other people who hid in the Secret Annex during World War II. The museum is located in the house where Anne Frank and her family stayed.
Can’t Miss: Anne Frank spent 761 days in the Secret Annex. The museum takes you through life in hiding.
Address: Westermarkt 20, 1016 GV Amsterdam, Netherlands
3. Wander the Red Light District
When the sun sets, the party begins. The Red Light District is one of Amsterdam’s most famous areas. It’s known for adult entertainment, but is also home to many bars, restaurants, and shops. It’s a lively area of the city that is safe and regulated.
Can’t Miss: Wander the narrow alleys and witness the women standing in doorways and windows waiting for their customers.
Address: Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Oudezijds Achterburgwal are the main streets.
2. Visit the Van Gogh Museum
The Van Gogh Museum is one of the most popular attractions in Amsterdam. The museum features the largest collection of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings and drawings in the world with more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 700 letters. Can’t Miss: One of my favorite Van Gogh paintings, The Potato Eaters, can be found here. While you might think about flowers when you think of the artist, this one is a bit darker.
Address: Museumplein 6, 1071 DJ Amsterdam, Netherlands
1. Cruise the Canals
Amsterdam’s canals are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offer stunning views of the city. Taking a canal cruise is a great way to see the city, learn about its history, and get from point to point.
Can’t Miss: Marvel at the the gorgeous 17th century canal houses, old merchant houses, and charming bridges as you cruise along.
Address: Amsterdam Canal Cruises | Stadhouderskade 550, 1072 AE Amsterdam, Netherlands
