United Airlines flight UA2480 between San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) was forced to divert to Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) after a passenger had a medical issue on board. Flight crew used medical equipment to treat the passenger and in the time that it took for it to be replaced, the crew timed out. Passengers were left waiting and hungry at the gate as food outlets in the airport were closed. A United captain stepped up and ordered 30 pizzas to brighten the delay.

I am harsh with United Airlines largely because I have spent so much time and money with the airline and know when it falls short on service or catering that it does not have to be that way. This is an example where United excels. If only more employees took the time to go that extra mile, United would have the shot at a better reputation.

This captain deserves kudos for feeding the passengers while they waited for a new crew to take them to Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) back on September 13th. My favorite comment on the TikTok video above comes from the captain’s daughter. She writes:

That’s my dad!!! i’m so blessed to be his daughter! he really is a great man!”

I have to agree with her as this was a classy move and not one that you see pilots do often. It reminds me of years ago when I was flying from New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). The flight was supposed to serve dinner, but it was not catered as it should have been from Chicago. The station manager went to Au Bon Pain and bought salads for the entire First Class cabin. This was in the old terminal and many years ago, but Tony saved the day.

Anthony’s Take: Examples like this make up for many of the complaints (both trivial and more serious) about United. More employees need to follow this captain’s lead so that United really can become the airline that it wants to be.
