Paris Is No Longer Dubbed “The Most Romantic Destination.” I Disagree With the New Top Spot

Paris has long been known as the City of Light, but it’s also unofficially regarded as the most romantic travel destination. The French capital lost its throne this year as Maui climbed up to take top billing. I think Maui is great, but disagree with this ranking.

Paris

Having been to all of the destinations ranked in the top, I can say that they all have their romantic appeal. Maui just nudged Paris out with 34% versus its 33%. Rome came in next with 29% of the vote and this was followed by Santorini, which captured 11%. Cancun (19%), Costa Rica (13%), and the British Virgin Islands (12%) also scored well. I’m not sure how these percentages break down because added together they are well over 100%. But, I digress. This study was conducted by Funjet Vacations and Talker Research.

Travel is linked to romance and some of the other stats from the survey solidified this hypothesis. These include:

  • 50% of single respondents look for love on vacation
  • Those surveyed said they would put their love on display by going for walks on the beach (55%), watching sunsets together (54%), or holding hands (53%)
  • Americans acknowledge that lesser-known destinations are better for setting the mood to be intimate with a partner (45%) and bonding with them overall (45%)
  • 62% say they are more romantic on vacation than during their regular life

I’ll counter this survey and say that there is a certain something in Paris that just makes the city feel romantic. Strolling over its bridges and streets, cafes, and just a sense of love in the air. It might be that I feel this way because Paris was the first European city that I visited, but my husband and I have been there together at least a dozen times and always find it romantic.

Anthony’s Take: I still think Paris should be tops. Maui is nice and great for a beach vacation, but it will never beat the sense of amour felt in Paris.

Maui is not romantic at all. If they’re going for a beach location, at least give it to Bora Bora.
I love Paris, it’s my favorite place in the world and this is actually great news because the less tourists in Paris the more wonderful she is.

I think the survey is a bunch of cow droppings. Sure, I suppose if you’re looking to get laid then Cancun is a likely place to try but Santorini?!? What a dump. A scenic dump to be sure but I’m not sure that staring down the cliff at the caldera for hours is really the way to set the mood and it’s expensive for Greece, boring, and lacks good beaches. It’s like dating a gorgeous but stunningly stupid person: it’s vaguely fun for a short time but you don’t want to do it again. Costa Rica does have a lot going for it and if it had been named to the top spot that would be understandable.

I’m with you about Paris. It certainly has its quirks but it abounds with charm and culture with superb food. In fairness, Rome hits a lot of the same points.

Anyway, I’d be interested in seeing the methodology of the survey given the surprising results.

Nothing makes my wife and I feel more in the mood than knowing the bed we’re in, in the resort we’re in, next to the golf course it’s on displaced a bunch of native Hawaiians. We’re heading straight to Lahaina for our next vacation! Dole products really have and aphrodisiac quality for us too!! What can we say – nothing feels more romantic to us than knowing thousands have died or been displaced to afford us to “holds hands”.

Nothing says Romance in Paris more than the sounds of screaming child brides to elderly polygamist Islamists on EU benefits.
Perhaps the sounds and images of mobs shouting Aluha Akbar; before and after attacking Jewish people or institutions.
Maybe the expanding No-go zones add to the romantic excitement of fleeing to safety.
The frequent looting and burning of businesses and police cars can be so romantic.

Paristan romance!
