United Airlines‘ caterer at Denver International Airport (DEN) provided flight attendants with something extra in their crew meals and it wasn’t holiday cheer on Christmas Day. The meals provided made more than 200 flight attendants fall ill with food poisoning-like symptoms after consuming the meals.

The Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) received numerous reports from its members based in Denver that they were not feeling well after consuming the holiday meals. Symptoms include stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Some flight attendants speculate that a warm salad was the culprit, while others felt that the meals were left at room temperature for too long.

The AFA released the following statement:

We have received numerous reports from members who may have become ill after eating the UA holiday meal in DEN. While there is no way to know for certain, it appears that the issue affecting over 200 Flight Attendants, in addition to other employees, may be connected to the holiday meal provided to employees in DEN.”

The AFA is advising flight attendants that have been impacted by these potentially contaminated meals to take the following action:

  • If they missed work as a result of the above, they should email their supervisors (and any Absence Supervisors who may contact them) and report that they missed work due to the meal.
  • The company is aware of those who were provided meals, as badge scans were required.
  • There should be NO Holiday Absence Certificate required for work missed as a result of this issue.
  • While there should not be points associated with this, if that happens, they should email their supervisors and request that the points be removed.
  • If they were/are downline while sick, they should follow the steps for downline sick calls found here.

United Airlines also released a statement. It reads:

United is monitoring reports from some employees about gastrointestinal symptoms following holiday meals served to Denver employees on Wednesday, and we are in contact with health authorities. There has been no impact on our operation.”

Anthony’s Take: I’ve often complained about the food on United, but it never got me sick. I hope that this does not cause too many issues for the flight attendants or the airline with a busy weekend of holiday travel ahead.
