In January, I covered JetBlue’s plans for a massive expansion on the East Coast with 17 new routes coming this spring/summer. Today, nine of those flights will takeoff for the first time including Wilmington International Airport (ILM) and Norfolk International Airport (ORF), which are new cities for JetBlue.
Flights beginning today include two from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) as well as seven from the New York Area with one launching at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), one at New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and five from New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
With these new routes, JetBlue will offer 72 nonstop destinations from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), which is more than any other airline. There are four more routes coming in May and June. New routes include:
- Norfolk International Airport (ORF) (1x daily during the summer; starts on April 30th)
- Wilmington International Airport (ILM) (1x daily during the summer; starts on April 30th)
New York City’s Three Airports (Yes, I Know Newark is in NJ)
As New York’s Hometown Airline®, JetBlue is adding new and bringing back some routes across the New York metropolitan area. These include three from New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK):
- Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) (1x daily during the summer; starts on April 30th)
- Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) (1x daily year-round; starts on April 30th)
- Hartford’s Bradley International Airport (BDL) (1x daily year-round; starts on April 30th)
- Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) (1x daily year-round; starts on April 30th)
- Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport (PVD) (1x daily year-round; starts on April 30th)
JetBlue will expand its offerings from United’s Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) hub with one route (another is coming in June) and add one additional from New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA). These include:
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) (3x daily during the summer; starts on April 30th)
- New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to/from Tampa International Airport (TPA) (2x daily year-round; starts on April 30th)
Service between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will feature JetBlue’s Mint® service with fully lie-flat private suites.
Daniel Shurz, JetBlue’s Senior Vice President of Revenue, Network, and Enterprise Planning, said:
Wilmington and Norfolk are the kinds of relaxing and distinct destinations our customers are craving, especially during the summer months. These new routes expand our presence in Boston and connect even more communities to JetBlue’s broad network across the US, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe.”
Anthony’s Take: JetBlue is adding lots of new routes this summer. This should serve it well as it plays to its strengths in New York and Boston. New routes are great, but the big news and question on everyone’s mind remains how JetBlue and United will partner.
