One of the most obnoxious travel behaviors comes from people who watch videos or make calls without headphones. These self-absorbed folks do it in train stations, in airports, in lounges, on trains, and even on planes. Most of the time no one calls them out on their behavior (although I have gotten into heated arguments over their poor manners in lounges before). Now, one city is cracking down (and I hope the rest of the world follows) with fines for using the speakerphone function in the train station.
The New York Post reported that a man identified only as “David” was charged a €150 fine for using the speakerphone function on his phone in a train station in the French city of Nantes. David was speaking to his sister when an official from France’s state-owned rail company, SNCF, stopped him and issued the fine. He thought it was a joke at first, but was not laughing as the fee increased to €200 because he did not pay it on the spot.
The passenger has hired an attorney and plans to fight the fine according to CNN. I think this is a wonderful idea and wish that it would be implemented everywhere. There is no need to be an inconsiderate jackass and use your phone for FaceTime, to watch TikTok videos, or to listen to music without headphones. If you’re not sure how to use your phone with headphones, don’t even bother. Wait until you’re in the privacy of your car, hotel, or home so that you do not inconvenience and incense nearby travelers.
Anthony’s Take: The city of Nantes has the right idea. Now, let’s implement that globally to take care of all of the inconsiderate people that think nothing of others around them.

This is something that I see frequently and always leaves me scratching my head. Given the ability to have a private conversation that won’t disturb others, I’m left with the impression that this behavior stems from pure malignant narcissism that produces the belief that those around you want to hear your conversation.
Hopefully airlines and club lounges will quickly follow suit.
…and in hospitals, too.
I witnessed that one myself, unfortunately…
