Delta Air Lines flight DL876 took off from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) this morning and began to fly to Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) when smoke filled the cabin. The aircraft returned moments later due to the “haze inside the aircraft” and passengers were evacuated via emergency slides onto the tarmac.

The thick smoke filled the cabin, but it does not appear that any of the 94 passengers or five crew sustained injuries. Emergency services met the aircraft and passengers were shuttled back to the terminal.

DL876 Flight Status

The flight and its planned return flight from Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) were both cancelled as the Boeing 717 was taken out of service.

Delta Air Lines released the following statement:

The flight crew followed procedures to return to Atlanta when a haze inside the aircraft was observed after departure. Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, and we apologize to our customers for the experience.”

Anthony’s Take: This must have been scary. Passengers seem relatively calm in the video and thankfully everyone made it out without injuries.
