The cost of Global Entry will increase for the first time in 15 years. US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced in April that it would be increasing the fees on three Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP). NEXUS, SENTRI, and Global Entry will each cost $120 after October 1st. Now, Capital One has increased the benefit amount to $120 to offset this increased cost.

Citi was the first card issuer to bump up the benefit, followed by Chase, American Express, and finally, Capital One. The following Capital One cards will see the benefit increased:

This is the first increase in cost that the agency has levied in the past 15 years. It’s great to see credit card issuers stepping up to offset the total cost The new fees will be:

  • SENTRI (which allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers entering the United States using dedicated primary lanes at Southern land border ports) will shift from an “a la carte” fee structure to a uniform cost of $120.
  • NEXUS (a joint program managed by CBP and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) that allows dedicated processing between the US and Canada) will increase from $50 to $120.
  • Global Entry, which has saved me countless hours when entering the United States, will see a nominal increase from $100 to $120.

Anthony’s Take: A $20 increase is nominal for a benefit that makes life so much easier for international travelers. I have had Global Entry since the beginning and love that I hold several cards that pay the fee each time it’s up for renewal.

Anthony’s Credit Card Pick: I love the lounges that the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card allows me to access. I’ve been using this card more and more this year. While it does have an annual fee of $395, it provides many travel benefits like a $300 annual credit for bookings through Capital One Travel, up to a $120 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck®, and 10x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel as well as 5x miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel.
