American Airlines and Porter Airlines requested permission from the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to launch a reciprocal codeshare agreement. This will cover routes between the United States and Canada as well as American’s flights to Latin America.
Porter Airlines is the third largest airline in Canada and the only one of the top three that is not partnered with a US carrier. Air Canada (the largest in Canada) is a member of Star Alliance and a close partner of United Airlines. WestJet (the number two airline in Canada) is aligned with Delta Air Lines (Korean Air and Delta just acquired a stake) as well as several other SkyTeam airlines. This left Porter Airlines and American Airlines as pretty much the only choice as partners.
Porter offers an elevated Economy Class onboard the 132-seat Embraer E195-E2 aircraft. It promises that all passengers receive “celebrity treatment with Porter’s elevated economy experience” and offers a 2-2 seating configuration that’s a premium experience for all passengers with complimentary snacks, beer, and wine served in glassware, as well as free Wi-Fi. PorterReserve passengers enjoy additional benefits such as priority check-in, enhanced legroom, and fresh, healthy meals, while these features can also be purchased à la carte with PorterClassic fares. The airline operates primarily from Toronto Billy Bishop Airport (YTZ) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).
Anthony’s Take: There is no mention yet of reciprocal benefits or this being more than a codeshare arrangement. If approved, the two carriers could market each others’ flights and sell combined itineraries.
