Ryanair flight FR8826 from Brindisi Airport (BDS) to Turin Airport (TRN) had to be evacuated with emergency slides after an engine surge caused a fire as the aircraft began its takeoff roll. The video is dramatic, but thankfully there were no injuries.

Passengers noticed flames coming out of the Boeing 737-800’s engine while it was taxiing to takeoff. All 184 passengers and six crew members were able to deplane via emergency slides and walk away from the aircraft and were brought back to the terminal via buses.

The airport was closed as firefighters contained the fire. Flights into and out of the airport were suspended until the fire was controlled.

Ryanair released a statement that reads:

Flight FR8826 from Brindisi to Turin was delayed this morning after cabin crew observed fumes on the outside of the aircraft. Passengers were disembarked without incident and returned to the terminal by bus.”

Anthony’s Take: I actually flew out of Brindisi Airport (BDS) when I was exploring Puglia this summer. It’s a tiny airport largely served by low-cost carriers like easyJet, Ryanair, and Vueling. Thankfully, this situation was noticed, addressed, and everyone walked away safely.

An engine catching fire is known as a surge? Never heard the term used in that context before. Live and learn.
