On Friday, CrowdStrike pushed a software update and crippled the systems of airlines, hotels, banks, hospitals, and more globally (more here). This led to thousands of cancelled and delayed flights on Friday, yesterday, and today. While most carriers were largely able to get their operations in check, Delta struggled and seemed to get worse as the weekend went on. Delta CEO, Ed Bastian, released a statement today.

More than 3,500 Delta Air Lines and Delta Connection flights were cancelled through Saturday with more happening today. Delta’s teams are working to recover its systems and restore operations to normal, but it’s taking some time. The IT crash occurred during what Bastian is calling “the busiest travel weekend of the summer.” Delta was booked with loads exceeding 90%. This severely limited the airline’s ability to accommodate passengers on other flights.

Bastian released this apology:

I want to apologize to every one of you who have been impacted by these events. Delta is in the business of connecting the world, and we understand how difficult it can be when your travels are disrupted.

Please know that Delta’s entire team of the best professionals in the business have been working around the clock to safely get you where you need to go, and restore the reliable, on-time experience you’ve come to expect when you fly with us.”

Delta has issued a travel waiver to let customers change their itineraries at no cost. The airline is also continuing to issue meal, hotel, and transportation vouchers to impacted passengers. Some travelers are also receiving Delta SkyMiles and travel vouchers. Passengers can get the latest information on their flights via the Delta app or Delta.com.

Anthony’s Take: Delta is struggling the worst out of the major US airlines to get its operations restored. It’s been a rough travel weekend and this will hopefully all be back on track by tomorrow.
